2026 Grijalva Skate Park Update: We’re Finally Getting Close

If you’ve been around the local skate scene for a while, you know the story of Grijalva Skate Park — lots of conversations, lots of waiting, and plenty of skaters wondering when things would actually start moving.

Well, it looks like we’re finally getting close.

According to the latest update from the city, a contractor has officially been selected for the project. The contract and agreement are currently being drafted and are expected to go before City Council in April for final approval. If everything gets the green light, the city plans to schedule construction shortly after.

Right now the tentative timeline points to late May or June for construction to begin, although as with any public project, that timeline could still change.

For the local skate community, this is a big step. For years, skaters in the area have continued to push the sport forward despite limited local options. From driveway sessions to street spots and small meetups at the park, the scene has stayed alive because of the people in it — not because of perfect facilities.

That’s part of what makes this moment feel important. A proper upgrade to Grijalva Skate Park has the potential to give the next generation of skaters a place to progress, connect, and grow the community even more.

In the meantime, the local skate scene continues to do what it’s always done — keep skating.

At Sunny Smith Boardshop, we’ve been lucky to see that firsthand. Every week new kids come through the door getting their first board, and longtime locals stop by to talk about sessions, spots, and what’s happening around town. Shops like ours exist because the community keeps showing up.

If construction does begin this summer, it could mark the start of a new chapter for skating in the area.

Until then, we’ll keep doing what we’ve always done — supporting the local skate scene, keeping boards rolling, and helping the next generation get started.

And when the new park finally opens, you can bet the local crew will be ready. 🛹
